We’re just upon Labour Day Weekend and it’s also the 9th week of the strike in Mount Pearl.
Unions rallied in support of the municipal workforce this morning outside city hall in an effort to convince council to work out the few issues which remain.
Ken Turner, President of Local 2099, says they would much rather be back at work—not on the picket lines. He says all they’re guilty of is trying to protect their ground and nobody has done anything illegal.

He says they will not stand for imposing disciplinary measures on people just because they chose to go on strike.
Many union members and officials were on hand to show their support including Carolyn Rice who referenced the strike at D.J. Composites in Gander, one of the longest in the province’s history.
She says they were in “dire straits.” She says people lost personal items and they were starting to lose their homes.
She says the bullying and harassment needs to stop, and negotiators need to get back to the table.
