Federal Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan is indicating that changing planned increases to the carbon tax could be more difficult than it appears.
The Atlantic Premiers wrote federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault this week, urging him to reconsider further increases to the carbon tax in light of rising inflation.
Premier Andrew Furey says the intent of increasing the carbon tax has effectively been met as people adjust their habits to reflect soaring costs.
Minister O’Regan is in Stavanger, Norway where he attended the Offshore Northern Seas 2022 conference. He says it was clear to him in conversation with investors and business leaders that they like stability and certainty.
He says when it comes to the carbon tax or the price on pollution “you don’t play willy-nilly with it.” He says these types of decisions need to be certain and predictable so that investment decisions can be made. “Those investment decisions create jobs…bring in investment, they bring in revenue,” says O’Regan.
