A local advocate is offering a few tips to keep sun-safe during these long, hot summer days.
Bev Barbour with Strides for Melanoma recently won the second place Rays of Hope Top Fundraising Award, for her Strides for Melanoma Sunset Edition event back in May.
Exposure to the sun’s UV rays can cause melanoma, an aggressive, and sometimes deadly form of skin cancer.
Barbour says there are a few ways for people to protect themselves from the harmful effects of the sun.
She recommends avoiding exposure to the sun when the UV rays are at their peak between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Wear sun-protective clothing, and for areas of the skin that are not protected by clothing, apply a broad spectrum sun screen with SPF 50 or greater. Apply 15 minutes before exposure and reapply every couple of hours.
