Last year was a huge iceberg year in Newfoundland and Labrador. And while some are comparing this year to last, one enthusiast believes that is comparing apples to oranges.
Diane Davis, administrator of the Newfoundland and Labrador icebergs report Facebook page, says they saw “ridiculous numbers of Icebergs last year.
Davis says the bergs have started coming down and they are having a pretty good season with them being spotted as far up as Lumsden. The “hot spot” this week has been in Brighton.
That said, Davis says there are factors impacting the number of icebergs being seen off our shores this year.
She says they seem to be hitting the Twillingate area and then are moving out further into the Atlantic and they do appear to be further out this year. Another impact, according to Davis, has been a lack of pack ice, which she says helps to insulate and protect bergs as they move down the coast. She says the province had lots of pack ice last year and a boom in icebergs.
