Police are trying to nip a tragedy in the bud by urging teens to celebrate the end of the school year drug and alcohol-free.
Such year-end parties are a right of passage for many but they can get out of hand when intoxication enters the equation.
The RNC says unsupervised events, particularly field parties, are unsafe for everyone.
They note two investigations are currently underway involving high school parties last weekend.
Police are hoping parents will speak with their celebrating students about the dangers of such events, and to make other plans for them to celebrate responsibly.
Tips include knowing exactly where their kids are going, establishing frequent check-in times throughout the night, reminding them they can call any time for help, and establishing a code word to signal for help, just in case.
As for the teens themselves, police are reminding them not to drive impaired or take a ride from someone who has been drinking or using drugs.
And while it may seem like a no-brainer, kids are also reminded to have a cellphone and make sure it’s charged before heading out.
