The Town of Gander is reducing both residential and commercial mil rates in its municipal budget.
The town presented its budget yesterday, dropping the residential mil rate from 7.6 to 7.4 and the commercial rate from 7.7 to 7.5.
The non-residential water and sewer rate is dropping from 7.7 to 7.5.
The town made the changes due to higher property assessments, and says without reducing the mil rates, many residents and businesses would have faced big increases in their property taxes.
The Town of Gander says it entered the 2026 budget cycle with a projected structural deficit of about $716,000 but that was addressed through increased revenue, the management of staffing vacancies and $200,000 in cuts to operating expenses.
