Some of the most devastating forest fires this province has ever experienced happened in 2025, and Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador is looking at ways to mitigate some of the risks ahead of the next fire season.
President Amy Coady references some of the talks currently happening with the provincial government around the construction of natural fire breaks, and more funding and training for local fire departments as examples.
As well, MNL has launched a Climate Ready NL program, through funding from The Federation of Canadian Municipalities, which communities can avail of.
She says the program can be used to help communities assess potential risks and concerns, use natural assets to mitigate risks, and create plans to mitigate damage when events do happen.
