Hurricane-force winds have caused extensive damage to the Bruce II recreation complex in Port aux Basques.
Video shared on Facebook shows the roof lifting off the building and flapping about like clothes on a washing line.
The town of Port aux Basques says it has contacted its insurance provider and acknowledges what the sports complex means for people in the region.
Crews are scheduled to begin damage assessments on the building tomorrow. Until those assessments are complete, the building will remain closed to the public.
The Bruce II was built in 1996 to replace the former rec complex which was destroyed by fire. It contains an ice surface, two curling sheets, bowling alley, swimming pool and fitness centre.
The full extent of the damage is not yet known, but appears extensive.
VOCM News will have more on this developing story as the information becomes availalble.
