Memorial University is not dropping any hints at where the next cuts are coming, but it remains firm that further cost-cutting measures are coming.
MUN trimmed a million dollars from its administration budget this week, eliminating one position and reducing the status of several others.
Education Minister Paul Dinn, who describes MUN’s administration as bloated, froze tuition levels for 2026-27 as a way of encouraging the university to trim down.
President Janet Morrison says their only sources of revenue are tuition fees and grants, and the provincial government has reduced the amount of grant money over the past several years.
“Every dollar the university spends on overhead is a dollar we can’t invest in academic delivery,” says Morrison. “Our priorities are academic quality, the student experience, long-term financial sustainability, and the intensity of research.”
