It’s going to be slick underfoot with a prolonged period of freezing rain in store for parts of the island starting this evening.
Environment Canada has issued a freezing rain warning for the Avalon and Bonavista Peninsulas with 5 to 10 mm expected over the course of 8 to 14 hours.
Meteorologist Rodney Barney says the freezing rain will be most persistent over higher elevations while more coastal areas could see showers instead.
He says the Bonavista Peninsula, which is at a higher elevation, is more likely to see the more prolonged period of freezing which could make for slippery road conditions and result in a build up of ice on infrastructure such as power lines. Other areas will most likely see a mix of freezing rain and rain.
Barney says things should improve tomorrow afternoon as temperatures rise above the freezing mark.
