Marine Atlantic has registered its plans for improvements to docking and terminal facilities in Port aux Basques for environmental approval.
Earlier this year the federal government put up $270 million to upgrade ramps, extend the docks and other improvements at Port aux Basques and Argentia.
The work will include the removal of Vardy’s Rock – a navigation hazard in Port aux Basques Harbour.

Marine Atlantic says additional work includes widening and deepening the channel approach and turning basin.
Waste rock will then be used to repair and upgrade the Pikes Island breakwater and create an infill area at Pikes Island which – it’s hoped – will create a new fish habitat.
The deadline for public comment is October 20th, with the minister’s decision expected by October 30th.
