Some startling local statistics are out on this, World Suicide Prevention Day.
The RNC has released the number of mental health-related calls they’ve received over the period between January 1 to August 31 of this year.
The Constabulary responded to a total of 1,878 mental health-related calls during that time. 1,617 of those calls were on the Northeast Avalon, 205 in the Corner Brook region, and 56 in Labrador with an average of 235 calls per month.
The calls related to a wide variety of health matters and are not all connected with suicide or suicidal ideation.
The RNC cautions that the numbers may not be a true reflection of Mental Health related calls for service and they do not include calls for service from the Mobile Crisis Response Team which is run through Eastern Health.
RNC says police are often called during a time of crisis, and it is possible that underlining mental health-related issues are contributing factors in many calls they receive outside the numbers released today.
