The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay is hiring an independent agency to complete the investigation into an incident where an Inuk man appears to have been thrown to the ground by a municipal officer.
The video of the situation surfaced on Friday and was shared by MHA Lela Evans on Facebook. The video can be seen at this link. Warning: It contains footage that may be disturbing to some viewers.
The officer has been placed on administrative duties effective immediately until the investigation is complete.
The town says this is being taken quite seriously by the Mayor, Council, and Management. They will be making no further comment pending the outcome of the investigation.
Meanwhile, the President of the NunatuKavut Community Council, Todd Russell, says he’s “outraged” after watching the video.
Russell says action must be taken swiftly as violence against indigenous peoples is a systemic issue.
