Residents of St. John’s and the eastern portion of the island are experiencing their first messy hit of winter today.
A snowfall warning is in place for the Avalon Peninsula North through to Terra Nova including the Bonavista and Burin peninsulas.
Police are advising the public of poor road conditions as there have been at least 8 accidents in the metro area so far today. They are asking drivers to slow down and make sure vehicles are properly cleaned off.
According to Environment Canada meteorologist, Justin Boudreau, up to 20 cm of snow is expected along the higher elevations with a messy snow/rain mix for coastal regions.
Yes that “stuff” has started to accumulate on the highways in the metro area. #nltraffic will need to adjust their driving to meet road conditions. This means #SNOWmeansSLOW and please don’t forget to clean snow from your vehicles. pic.twitter.com/R8UAYewMEC

Winds will gust up to 60 km/h in some areas but aren’t expected to be a major factor.
Boudreau says the temperature will hover around the zero degrees mark this afternoon.
He says temperatures will cool off tonight when most of the snow is expected to fall.
Boudreau says the snow will begin to taper off around noon on Sunday, with a few flurries in the afternoon.
We have responded to 8 collisions in the metro region in the last 4 hours. With darkness approaching we are reminding #nltraffic to reduce your speed when driving in inclement weather. #SNOWmeansSLOW
