The City of St. John’s is considering tightening up regulations surrounding residential fireworks.
Deputy Mayor Sheilagh O’Leary brought up the matter at yesterday’s council meeting.
She notes that vendors have many regulations to adhere to, but the rules are much more lax for consumers.
As an example, O’Leary says there are no regulations around what time of day a person is allowed to set fireworks off. She has heard concerns from residents about the effects which unannounced fireworks can have on those with special needs and on pets.
O’Leary has asked council and the city’s fire chief to look at how the regulations can be changed.
She argues that regulating the time of use would allow people time to prepare for them and calls having loose regulations around that “problematic.”
