It’s Gertie Hynes’ fondest desire to live long enough to see enough money raised to renovate the smallest and oldest cabin at Killdevil Church Camp on the province’s west coast.
The 85-year-old from Corner Brook has been involved with Killdevil camp—which is run by the Anglican church—since its inception back in 1959.
She has been diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic cancer and her time is limited, but it was her “dying wish” to launch a GoFundMe campaign to raise enough money to renovate Cabin 11 to make it fully accessible for children with disabilities.
Hynes wants people to know that this campaign is about ensuring any child, regardless of religious affiliation, race, ability, social status, etc, has the opportunity to have a wonderful and happy camping experience.
She says if her time has come, she’s ready, but lamented over what she could do to help “in the state I’m in.”
Hynes says nothing can be done to renovate the cabin over the winter, but she’s hoping that enough money will be raised come spring to see that work done next season. The goal is $95,000.
She says “I think I’m going to live long enough to see that money come in.”
If there are additional funds collected above and beyond the reconstruction costs, that money will be used to cover the cost of camp enrollment for eligible children who do not have the means.
