A collaborative mental health initiative between a St. John’s high school and a local singer is having a big impact on students.
Recently, Gonzaga High School and singer Ray Lake launched the “It’s Gonna Get Better” initiative.
It’s a video of the singer detailing his mental health journey, including a song he wrote about it.
Tracy Gardner, a teacher mentor with the Gonzaga Mental Health Coalition, says the partnership was born following a conversation she had with Lake’s wife about the song, and how it was going to appropriately be released during the pandemic with a message that things will improve.
Gardner recalls going around the school the day the kids first watched the video.
She says the students were enthralled with the video and the message. She believes it has empowered some of the students to tell their own stories.
Lake says he is “totally overwhelmed and blown away” at the impacts his message is having. According to Lake, the project has been a team effort.
Gonzaga’s Mental Health Coalition was so proud to launch our “It’s Gonna Get Better” initiative with Ray Lake last night. Thanks to Mr. Stack and our other community partners for joining us for this exciting announcement! Congratulations to all involved! @NLESDCA pic.twitter.com/rx2wQ0Qgs4
