The Liberal Party has committed to installing a statue commemorating the Beothuk at Confederation Building.
The announcement came on the campaign trail yesterday, as Premier Andrew Furey was on the ground in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
Furey says that, in consultation with Indigenous leaders, the process to erect the monument has already been started.
According to Furey, it is important that the “true heritage” of the province is represented in the province’s monuments and historic sites.
Advancing work towards reconciliation with Indigenous people in Newfoundland and Labrador is a top priority. In consultation with Indigenous leaders, the Furey government is working to reflect Indigenous heritage in statues and monuments, and provide cultural education. pic.twitter.com/TgLc1WFSoo
