The RCMP believes they did all they could under the circumstances of a shooting incident near Terra Nova Tuesday night.
30-year-old Kyle Rideout from Cottlesville is facing a number of serious charges as the result of the incident.
He appeared in Gander court on Wednesday, charged with careless use of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and unauthorized possession of a firearm.
The incident prompted police to issue a warning of an “active shooter” in the area, asking people to shelter in place.
When asked if there was anything police could’ve done differently, or better in the situation, District policing officer in charge of the Eastern Region with the RCMP, Dan Austin doesn’t think so.
He says the main thing is that everyone from the public, to police, went home safe. Austin adds that they were able to take Rideout into custody and things went well.
Austin says communication was exacerbated by poor cell reception in the area.
Police issued a public alert via news outlets and social media, and an Alert Ready notification was ready to go, according to Austin, but not yet deployed when Rideout was taken into custody.
RCMP say had the alert been issued, the wording used would have described the incident as “shots fired” as opposed to “active shooter” as more information became available.
