International borders are beginning to open up and travel is starting to pick up once again, but for one family here in the province the pandemic situation in their home country was too much to take the risk.
Johann Johannson was born in Canada and his father is from Iceland. In that country, there has been strong vaccine uptake, but they are currently in the middle of a fourth wave of cases of the Delta variant.
Johannson and his family were set to travel to Iceland earlier this month for a wedding but decided to cancel the trip at the last minute due to the surge in cases.
He says growing up, he took the trip to Iceland every summer but this year’s cancellation marks the third year in a row that won’t be happening.
