Concerns continue to be raised about foreign ownership of the country’s offshore fishery.

Federal officials are currently reviewing foreign ownership of offshore fishing licence.

The FFAW and SEA-NL have been sounding the alarm about corporate concentration in the fishery and foreign ownership. SEA-NL’s Ryan Cleary is calling on the provincial government to launch its own review into the matter.

Danish-based Royal Greenland bought out a number of plants formerly owned by Quinlan Brothers last year with the former provincial fisheries minister’s approval.

Provincial Fisheries Minister Derrick Bragg says the principle of adjacency needs to be understood and exercised.

It will be one of the main issues he hopes to discuss with the country’s next fisheries minister once a new government is in place.
