A man who returned to Newfoundland from Ontario to retire is second-guessing his choice, after discovering that the community in which he now lives has no consistent source of water.
Greg Bennett bought a home in West Bay, next to Lourdes where he grew up.
He bought the house online, but didn’t realize that the community, which is a Local Service District, has no water and sewer.
Area residents have surface wells, but the water is not consistent and the quality leaves a lot to be desired.
He says the tannins in the water mean that his toilets and hot water tank have to be replaced regularly.
He says the surface wells in the community regularly dry up, leaving residents to collect water from brooks with which to flush their toilets.
Bennett says there was talk about two decades ago of having West Bay connected to the water lines in neighbouring Lourdes, but that has yet to happen.
He’s launched a petition calling for action.
He says the last he’s heard is that they’re still waiting on funds.
He says they’ve waited long enough, adding that it’s ridiculous in 2021 to have no consistent source of water.
