A significant part of the province’s history and the people who contributed to building Newfoundland and Labrador is being recognized in the latest mural to be unveiled in Botwood this weekend.
The central Newfoundland town has developed a reputation for its murals depicting various aspects of regional and provincial history.
President of the Botwood Mural Arts Society, Trudy Stuckless says the latest mural, by St. John’s artist Janice Udell is dedicated to local war brides.
Young women, mostly from England and Scotland, met their Newfoundland husbands overseas and came back to build their families far from home.
Stuckless says descendants, visitors and residents alike will recognize something familiar in the latest work of art.
She says people with family connections to war brides will be able to relate to the imagery which follows growing up in Europe to travelling across the ocean and settling in Newfoundland.
The latest mural, “They Follow Their Hearts” on The Hair Shop at 13 Fernwood Drive, will be officially unveiled on Saturday.
