The shrimp fishery opened a few days ago in Area 6—northeastern Newfoundland, southern Labrador—but owner/operators have yet to leave the wharf as nobody is buying. Terry Ryan and his son Josh are planning to go out this weekend anyway in the hope that somebody will buy their catch when they return to LaScie Sunday or Monday.
Terry says processors aren’t willing to pay the $1.42 per pound set by the Fish Price Setting Panel.
He’s calling on the FFAW and the Association of Seafood Processors to do something to get the fishery going.
If nobody buys the 50,000 lbs of shrimp they’re prepared to dump it.
SEA-NL executive director Ryan Cleary says the price setting panel is not working as buyers aren’t buying and fishermen aren’t fishing.
