It appears as though the local rental market is getting tighter with more and more people indicating they’re having trouble finding a suitable apartment or rental property.
Sherwin Flight, Administrator of the Newfoundland Tenant and Landlord Support Group Facebook page, says he’s seeing more posts and comments from people who are finding it harder to find a place to rent.
In the past, they’ve seen people with pets or others with children who have had trouble, but now, it seems just about everyone is getting frustrated finding a rental property.
In addition to the support group, he runs some rental groups across the province as well, which show a large number of people who might see a post looking for a place to rent, but not a single reply with anything to offer.
The latest stats seem to bear that out. According to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the vacancy rate in the NL rental market went from 7.2 percent in October 2020 to 3.4 in October 2021. The average rent for a two-bedroom rental property rose from $891 dollars a month in 2020 to $926 in 2021.
