The Crown says new information from the RNC led to criminal charges against a former CEO of Baffin Fisheries being dropped. But they won’t say what the information was, citing commercial sensitivities.
Garth Reid was accused of fraud over $5,000 and breach of trust. But those charges have been withdrawn, with the Crown saying there was no longer a reasonable likelihood of a conviction.
It all stemmed from allegations that Reid used more than a million dollars of company cash to build a small mansion on family land in Winterton.
A civil judgment in 2019 found he did use the funds unlawfully and ordered him to pay the money back, but Reid has since filed a counter-suit.
Last week, Baffin Fisheries convinced the Supreme Court to set dates for a civil trial that’s set for June of next year.
