The federal government has announced more money for more initiatives to gets guns off the streets and more policing into neighborhoods.
To that end, $3.6 million will be forwarded to police in the province to fight that kind of crime and prevent violence from happening in the first place.
Federal Minister Helena Jaczek made the announcement at RNC headquarters in St. John’s this morning, on behalf of Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino.
The funds will flow over the next five years to support numerous proactive initiatives, including support for law enforcement and prevention programs through more hiring and training.
The money is in addition to $390 million announced earlier this month for police across the country, building on the Take Action Against Gun and Gang Violence program announced in 2017.
It also complements the effort to build stronger borders where the feds have invested nearly $500 million on more security, and deeper co-operation with the United States to fight gun smuggling.
The initiatives also include new gun violence legislation, headlined by Bill C-21, and recently announced bail reform.
