Another signatory to the historic Atlantic Accord has passed away.
Pat Carney, the former MP and senator who pioneered roles for women in Canadian politics and journalism, has died at the age of 88.
A few weeks ago, Bill Marshall passed. He, too, signed the document during a high-profile event at the Hotel Newfoundland, now the Sheraton. Carney was the minister of energy in the Mulroney cabinet. Marshall was minister of energy in the Peckford cabinet.
The Accord endorses the concept that Newfoundland and Labrador should be the principal beneficiaries of the offshore oil and gas industry. It was created at a time when Hibernia was the only oilfield off Newfoundland.
