The RCMP is sending a warning to potential tipsters after they say serious fake tips were received by Crime Stoppers.
RCMP say Crime Stoppers is a useful resource for policing in the province, and it prides itself on anonymity to its users.
However, they warn that in cases where serious fake reports are made, which result in an urgent police response and the unnecessary deployment of additional police resources, that anonymity can be revoked.
They say those responsible could face criminal charges including public mischief.
They ask that the public call 911 to report emergency situations.
