Dean Penney was back in court this afternoon, charged with first-degree murder in the presumed death of his estranged wife.
Jennifer Hillier-Penney disappeared from the St. Anthony area more than seven years ago, on November 30, 2016.
There has been no sign of her since.
Dean Penney was arrested on December 15 in Deer Lake and charged with her murder.
He’s been in custody ever since, and is currently being held at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary in St. John’s.
He appeared in Corner Brook provincial court today by telephone from HMP, while his lawyer, Rosellen Sullivan, was also on the phone from St. John’s.
Sullivan told Judge Wayne Gorman she received “an incredible” amount of disclosure evidence from the Crown on Monday.
But she said she believes the most significant pieces of evidence are still to come.
Gorman, meanwhile, made it clear he wants to minimize delays in the case, asking the Crown when they expect to receive the rest of the evidence from police.
In the absence of a firm timeline, he asked the Crown to “impress upon the police” the importance of forwarding the remainder of the evidence in the case as soon as possible.
The case will be called again on January 23.
