The St. John’s Caps are one win away from senior hockey supremacy in the province.
It took overtime, but the Caps defeated the Deer Lake Red Wings, in Deer Lake last night, 7-6 to take a 3-0 stranglehood in the best of seven finals for the Herder Memorial Trophy.
Joel Bishop had a hat trick, including the game-winner in O.T., deflating the hometown Red Wings fans. Kyle McGrath, Matthew McKim, Mark Rideout and Jackson Murphy-Johnson also scored for the winners.
Brandon Hynes had a hat trick for Deer Lake in a losing cause. Mitchell Alexander Normore chipped in with a pair while Jonathan Park adding a single for the Red Wings.
The Caps can wrap up the championship with a win tonight on the west coast.
Game 5, if the Red Wings can stave off the end tonight, would be played tomorrow at the Hodder Memorial Centre in Deer Lake, with puck drop at 1:30 p.m.
