Police in Belleville, Ontario say an officer is in critical but stable condition in hospital after exchanging gunfire with a 29-year-old man outside a local synagogue last evening.

The man involved is reported to be in life-threatening condition, but how the events played out is still under investigation.

Belleville Police Service Deputy Chief Sherri Meeks says the shots were fired outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue as congregants were gathering for Yom Kippur – the holiest day on the Jewish calendar.

“Every person deserves to feel safe while attending a place of worship, gathering with loved ones or participating in community life. We have increased patrols, and are maintaining a heightened police presence throughout the city, including around places of worship.”

The officer has been identified as Constable Jeff Smith who has served with the Belleville Police Service since 2013.

“Our thoughts are with Constable Smith, his family, his friends, and his colleagues” Deputy Chief Meeks told reporters today. “Supporting them has been our top priority.”
