The Hibernia Management and Development Company says it has implemented changes following a near-miss at the oil platform two weeks ago, an incident which had the potential to be fatal.
Crews were installing a half-tonne lighting pole that was rigged with two wire slings and guided into position using a tagline. After lowering the pole into position and installing one bolt to secure the base, the wire slings simultaneously failed, causing the pole to move and come to rest against the upper rail of a temporary scaffold. The one bolt which had been installed prevented further movement.
There were two workers on the scaffolding at the time, but neither was injured.
HMDC says it has enhanced planning and communication, and updated procedures to reduce the risk of recurrence.
