A wind warning is in effect for the Avalon Peninsula, and already some areas are seeing the effects of strengthening gusts.
Winds are forecast to gust as high as 110 km/h and as high as 130 km/h along the coast, prompting an orange wind warning.
By mid-afternoon winds had already begun to intensify with gusts as high as 100 in the metro region and 110 reported in Grate’s Cove.
A blowing snow warning is also in effect as the temperature drops and the precipitation turns to snow.
City crews were called out to the city’s east end this afternoon after a tree toppled on Abraham Street, blocking the road completely.
Winter storm warning in effect for Corner Brook
In the meantime, the winter storm warning continues for Corner Brook and the west coast where more than 20 cm of snow has fallen, whipped around by high winds reducing visibility to nil.
Today’s scheduled Corner Brook city council meeting has been postponed due to blizzard conditions. Council will meet tomorrow, once the city digs out from the current storm.
Environment Canada meteorologist Ian Hubbard says the strong winds will persist through tonight before easing tomorrow morning.
He says the snow will start to dissipate into flurries for most areas overnight as well.
