A freeze in tuition is something which students at Memorial University have been lobbying for for some time, but they have more questions than answers after an announcement by the minister of education out of the blue.
Paul Dinn’s hand was forced after the Canadian Federation of Students put out a news release Tuesday morning stating that Dinn had promised the freeze during a meeting with them the day before. The minister then confirmed such later in the day.
Nathan Gillingham, the director of external relations at MUNSU, says a four per cent increase was planned for next fall but they don’t know if the loss of revenue will mean cuts in academic programming, or if government will make up the shortfall.
Gillingham notes that it’s the Board of Regents, not government, who decide on tuition fees.
