Denmark’s foreign minister met with NATO members in London yesterday to discuss Arctic security and U.S. President Donald Trump’s escalating demands to take over the autonomous region of Greenland.
Trump has threatened to impose tariffs against eight countries who support Denmark and Greenland – that includes Norway, Sweden and the U.K. with whom Lars Løkke (LOW-keh) Rasmussen met yesterday.
The meeting came as Trump once again ramped up his threats, saying he will “100%” impose even greater tariffs if he doesn’t get his way in acquiring Greenland.
Rasmussen says NATO and the EU must unite to find a solution while U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer is urging “calm discussion” to resolve the issue.
Rasmussen admits he’s surprised by the U.S. position, particularly given former conversations with Trump while he served as Prime Minister.
“I use the word ‘surprised’ and I think I will stay on that,” Rasmussen told reporters in London, “I mean, I have no intention to escalate this.”
