The Nunatsiavut Government says it “stands in solidarity” with Greenland against recent threats by U.S. President Donald Trump to acquire the island.
In a sudden about-face, Trump declared on Truth Social last night that a ‘framework of a future deal’ had been reached following conversations with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, but what that means is unclear.
No details have been provided and Trump indicated that talks are continuing. It came as a surprise to many given the escalating nature of Trump’s rhetoric in recent weeks.
There are suggestions that Trump is looking at Denmark ceding sovereignty over areas of Greenland where the U.S. would build military bases, including access to natural resources.
Denmark and Greenland have both been clear that any question surrounding sovereignty is non-negotiable.
Nunatsiavut President Johannes Lampe emphasized the strong bonds linking the Inuit of Nunatsiavut and Greenland and says “any attempt to impose outside control over Greenland is an attack on our freedom and self-determination.”
