The provincial government has announced its support for federal legislation on the prevention of intimate partner violence.
Bill S-242, also known as Georgina’s Law, calls for strong and coordinated national action to address the issue, which would ensure efforts across different jurisdictions are consistent, informed by lived experience, and focused on prevention and protection.
The bill’s namesake is Georgina McGrath Power of Branch. She is a survivor and advocate who has been working with NL Senator Fabian Manning to advance the legislation.
Government says they are committed to advocating for systemic change to reduce gender-based and family violence, and will prioritize community-led prevention initiatives and supports for survivors.
Government also commits to trauma-informed training for justice and law enforcement workers, and a trauma-informed review of the justice system.
They say they will consult on establishing new legislative tools so victims have more pathways to seek justice, and they will also expand Family Justice Services.
A letter of support for the legislation, which was also signed by the Liberals and NDP, was recently sent to Senator Manning.
