The MHA for Cartwright-L’Anse au Clair is very concerned with a report showing that the wharf in Red Bay is in serious disrepair.
That’s of particular concern since the historic community will be the landing site for the replica Basque whaling vessel the San Juan in 2027.
Red Bay gets its name from the red Basque roofing tiles found at the former whaling station site which dates back to the 1500s.
The original San Juan sank off the coast of Labrador in 1565 and the wreck still lies on the bottom, preserved by the region’s cold ocean waters.
MHA Lisa Dempster says she will continue to press government on giving the wharf the attention it needs.
“This is a public safety issue” says Dempster “it’s on (government) to find a way to make this safe for the provincial, national and international people that will come to see this huge event.”
