Most Canadians support a ban on the use of social media platforms by children under the age of 16.
Angus Reid’s latest survey shows that three quarters of adults asked support a full ban on social media use for anyone under the age of 16.
The survey came out after Australia imposed a similar ban, and after a landmark ruling in the United States that called Instagram and YouTube deliberately addictive and harmful to children.
The President of the Angus Reid Institute, Shachi Kurl, told the Tim Powers Show on VOCM that the survey results were overwhelming.
“What’s driving it is the absolute level of concern and anxiety that adults are having on the impacts on young, not completely formed, not completely developed brains.”
She says more than 90 per cent of people asked across the board indicated that they are worried about excessive screen time, addiction to screen time, the impact on mental health and cyberbullying.
