Reports of fraudsters canvassing the Glovertown area have been determined to be false, but the RCMP are still encouraging people to be vigilant.
The initial report to the RCMP involved an interaction with a person claiming to be a representative of Eastlink. That company has since confirmed that representatives have been working in the area since April 2, and other residents have reported legitimate encounters with them.
That said, police are taking the opportunity to remind people to exercise caution when approached by anyone claiming to be a representative of a telecommunications company.
They say scammers will often use emotional and other pressure tactics to create a sense of urgency, and it is important for anyone interacting with a company representative – whether in person or over the phone – to slow the process down. People are encouraged to take the time to fact find, including contacting the company directly using customer service numbers located on bills and account summaries.
People should also destroy any physical documents that include personal information, such as phone and account numbers, before disposing of them.
