This is a big day in federal politics with three byelections in two provinces, and Prime Minister Mark Carney needing just one more seat to have a majority.
The Liberal national convention in Montreal came to a close on Saturday with the PM making his keynote address.
His campaign-style speech touched on the need for national unity, kindness and compassion. He related that to 9/11 when people in this province, particularly in the Gander region, opened up their doors and wallets to help stranded airline passengers.
Carney was in Gander last year.
“I went there and I sat down with two of the heroes of that moment – Diane Davis and Beulah Cooper. And they showed my a thank-you card from a young girl named Ellie. She had written ‘your kindness motivates me to use my kindness,'” said Carney at the Montreal convention.
“That phrase, Ellie’s phrase, captures what Canadians instinctively know.”
He ended by saying virtue is like a muscle – it grows with exercise.
“Kindness grows, and when we seek unity, unity grows. When we are Canadian, Canada grows. And when we are all in for Canada, we will build Canada strong for all.”
Five MPs have crossed the floor to join the Liberals over the last five months. The talk on Parliament Hill is that the floor crossings are not over yet.
