The mayor of a town on the southern Avalon, which attracts thousands of whale watchers in the run of a year, says the breakwater eroded further over the fall and winter and should be replaced.
St. Vincent’s-St. Stephen’s-Peter’s River is a popular place for tourists, but Mayor Verna Hayward says it’s a never-ending repair job with water from the ocean washing over the road.
St. Vincent’s can sometimes be a mecca for whale-watchers but Mayor Hayward is concerned about public safety. However, she says each time the town posts signage warning people not to venture too close to water’s edge, government, which owns the highway running through the town, removes it.
The mayor says they have reached out to the new government.
“We’ve been fighting for a breakwater for years and years, but now things here are more dangerous than ever. However, we keep getting the same response, that it’s cheaper to repair the road than replace a breakwater,” says Mayor Hayward.
