Not everyone is happy with an agreement reached on snow crab prices to allow the fishery to proceed, but the FFAW says threats of violence will be reported to police.
Harvesters were paid $6.00 a pound at the opening of the fishery – up to and including this past Saturday according to the agreement.
Harvesters are now getting $5.75 a pound, with the market determining the price paid based on the Urner Barry market formula, and following a specific pricing schedule.
That’s not sitting well with some harvesters, who are questioning whether union dues should be paid this year.
However, some dissatisfied with the latest development have taken matters further, causing FFAW President Dwan Street to post to Facebook to warn that threats of violence will be reported to police.
In 2021 “we had our office firebombed” says Street. “It’s unfortunate and (social media) does allow an arena for people to get very brave, because they don’t really see the consequences.” She says they get threats all the time, “we put up a post a few weeks ago and the first thing we see is ‘we need balaclavas and firebombs’ and we’re going to report that.”
Street says union members and even their family members have been threatened. Street says the sad part is, the union isn’t alone.
“We’ve seen comments says ‘you need to burn down the union office,’ but I’m not quite sure what burning down an office full of people whoa re actually doing their best and working for you, and trying to figure this out, is going to do. Direct your anger where it belongs, but that anger shouldn’t in any shape or form, include threats of violence, or abuse. We see it all the time, it’s not just us, we see it towards politicians, we see it towards anybody who puts themselves out to the public.”
