A fire ban is now in effect across Labrador.
The provincial government has declared the ban immediately under the Forestry Act because of extensive wildfire activity and elevated fire risk. It will remain in place until July 13.
All burn permits have been cancelled, and fireworks and sky lanterns are prohibited. Wood fires are also banned on forest land, within 300 metres of forest land, or anywhere with flammable vegetation.
Gas and propane barbecues are still allowed if they’re used safely, while enclosed smoker units for food preservation are also permitted.
Anyone travelling on forest land with an ATV or other motorized vehicle must have a properly equipped muffler and carry an approved fire extinguisher.
The province says violating the fire ban carries minimum fines of $50,000.
Anyone who spots a wildfire is asked to call 1-866-709-FIRE.
