Thunderstorms are moving across the Avalon Peninsula with torrential rain in the heaviest downpours causing water buildup on the roads.
Environment Canada earlier today issued a weather alert for many parts of the province.
It covers the Avalon Peninsula, Burin Peninsula, central Newfoundland and parts of the west coast.
Up to 30 to 40mm of rain an hour could fall in the heaviest downpours.
The storms are expected to linger through the early evening before finally moving offshore.
Meanwhile the power is out in St. Mary’s Bay, caused by a lightning strike.
Power outages are also being reported on the Burin Peninsula.
Newfoundland Power is investigating the cause of those outages affecting Winterland, Marystown, and a number of other areas.
