It’s going to be a “Soccer Sunday” in Mount Pearl with a professional match on the field followed by a watch party for the World Cup.

The Halifax Wanderers and Nottingham Forest Academy will face each other’s U-21 teams at the Gushue Sports Complex starting at noon Sunday. The match is part of the International Summer Series.

Just after that event wraps up, there will be a watch party for the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina.

Mount Pearl Mayor Dave Aker says even the superstars who reached the pinnacle of their sport started out in the minor system. He says it’s all about improving the game here and Canada’s standing.

“Some of them were identified early but others came up through soccer associations like the ones we have in Mount pearl and the rest of Newfoundland and Labrador,” says Mayor Aker.

The Spain-Argentina match begins at 4:30.
