The mining industry is encouraged that extra power for Labrador West is included in the new Churchill Falls agreement, and they’re digging into the details to gain a better understanding of what that means.
Mining expansion in Lab West has been hampered by limited power availability, and the region has been calling for an extra transmission line for years.
The executive director of Mining NL, Amanda McCallum, says what was announced this week is an improvement from the previous MOU.
“In December of 2024 there was 1,990 MW of power and we did have concerns if that would be enough power to meet the potential current needs as well as the needs into the future for potential development.”
“What was announced…and we’re still trying to distill…a lot of information that was shared with us, it’s saying 2,350 MW of power from the hydro and then an additional 400 MW of power potentially available from wind.”
“We’re pleased with that.”
