Firefighters were once again called into action in Grand Falls-Windsor last night after a structure fire broke out on Union Street.
Fire Captain Mike Goodyear says crews responded within minutes after the initial call, which came in at around 10:45 p.m. When they arrived, the building was engulfed in flames. Within an hour and a half, crews had the blaze under control.
Despite making quick work of the fire, Goodyear says it was challenging. Firefighters had to carefully watch their water and how they used it, as there were exposures on both sides and high voltage power lines right behind. They knew the building was unoccupied, and by the nature of the fire, it had to be battled from the outside.
There were no injuries, but the building appears to be a total loss.
The town has reported several suspicious fires in recent days. Goodyear says it appears the buildings involved are all in wooded areas. He asks residents to keep an eye out and report any suspicious activity.
