Operations at Legions across the province look quite different this year, as COVID-19 continues to halt normal events.
However, that didn’t stop Branch 1 of the Royal Canadian Legion from hosting a seal flipper dinner this week.
Legion member, Bill Tizzard says they sold 325 flipper dinners, which will help keep the lights on. He says they could have sold more, but reduced capacities meant fewer people could sit in to eat, and more take-out boxes went out the door.
Tizzard says the dinner is not the only event that has changed or been cancelled altogether. Normally at this time of the year, the Legion would be booked seven days a week until the middle of December with seasonal events.
He says that’s all gone for now, he says nobody wants to have dinner if they can’t get up and dance.
They are still holding weekly take-out dinners on Wednesdays, as well as bingo at limited capacity on Thursdays.
Tizzard says thanks to the generosity of the many who donated to the poppy campaign, and companies like Vogue Furriers who made a $20,000 donation to the Legion, they will be able to continue supporting veterans through tough times like COVID-19.
